With the support of the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership Journalism Fellowship, the School of Journalism is pleased to announce an international internship opportunity with the Bangkok Post.

The intern will spend 13 weeks working for the paper's features section, called Outlook. Outlook reporters provide indepth coverage of social issues and trends, as well as travel and lifestyle reports. The student will have the opportunity to shadow other reporters, carry out assignments, and work on longer features according to his/her interests. In addition, the intern will have opportunities to contribute to the news section. As a regional hub for NGO and UN activities, as well as a major tourist destination and international trading centre, Thailand offers a wide range of fascinating stories to follow.

September 1 – December 1

Interns should plan to arrive in Bangkok at least one week in advance of the internship, to settle in and enroll in language training.

Stipend

Students will receive a scholarship of $5,000 in two payments to cover the cost of airfare, accommodation, language training and sustenance during the internship.

Nonetheless, students should enroll in a Thai language night course during the internship. Pre-arrival interactive language instruction, such as Rosetta Stone Thai Level 1, or private tutoring, is also recommended.

Accommodation

A wide range of inexpensive guesthouses and short-term apartments are available for short-term visitors to Bangkok. Interns are expected spend the summer exploring these options online. School of Journalism and Outlook staff will advise on suitability, appropriate fees and location.

Budget

To ensure appropriate and realistic use of funds, and to ensure miscellaneous expected costs such as vaccinations, visa fees, key deposits, travel insurance, etc. are taken into account, interns will be expected to prepare a written budget in consultation with School of Journalism faculty prior to departure. Similar to other internships, the scholarship will support a modest but healthy lifestyle; students should not expect to save money.
