Undergraduate Program

Students can earn a BA with a Major in English by taking a minimum of 15 courses in the Department in addition to the other 25 courses required by the Faculty of Arts. Those who are interested in a more specialized degree (in many cases those who intend to go on to graduate school) can take a BA Honours Major in English, which requires 20 English courses. Those who are interested in writing creative work such as poetry, fiction, or drama can take a Concentration in Creative Writing within the BA English programs. If you are majoring in another discipline but would like to take a number of English courses in your BA program, you can consider taking a Minor in English. Finally, if you can also take a combined five-year BEd/BA in English.

BA MAJOR IN ENGLISH

A major in English must include fifteen courses in English:

1. ENGL 100 and 110 (Critical Reading and Writing I and II)

2. ENGL 211 and 212 (Literature Survey I and II)

3. One of ENGL 221, 222 or 223 (Poetry, Fiction, or Drama)

4. Two ENGL methods courses chosen from: ENGL 309, 349, 369, 388 and 399

5. Eight ENGL courses chosen from: ENGL 200-, 300- or 400-level, HUM 206, HUM 260, LING 200, 210, 212, 213. At least one course must be at the 300- or 400-level.

English majors are advised to complete the 200-level ENGL requirements before proceeding to the 300-level ENGL courses.

A major GPA of at least 65% is required.

BA HONOURS MAJOR IN ENGLISH

An Honours Major in English musit include twenty courses in English:

1. ENGL 100 and 110 (Critical Reading and Writing I and II)

2. ENGL 211 and 212 (Literature Survey I and II)

3. One of ENGL 221, 222 or 223 (Poetry, Fiction, or Drama)

4. ENGL 399 (Methods for the Study of Literary Theory)

5. Two further ENGL methods courses chosen from: ENGL 309, 349, 369, 388

6. Four of ENGL 400-489

7. ENGL 490 and 491; or two further courses from ENGL 400-489

8. Six further ENGL courses chosen from: ENGL 200-, 300- or 400-level, HUM 206, HUM 260, LING 200, 210, 212, 213. At least one course must be at the 300- or 400-level.

English Honours majors are advised to complete the 200-level ENGL requirements before proceeding to the 300-level ENGL courses.

A major GPA of at least 75% is required.

Concentration in Creative Writing

Students majoring in English may complete an optional concentration in Creative Writing by completing the following four courses within the major:

1. ENGL 251 (Expository and Persuasive Writing)

2. ENGL 252 (Creative Writing I)

3. Two of ENGL 352 AA-ZZ (Creative Writing II), ENGL 353 (Creative Writing III), ENGL 354 (Creative Non-Fiction), or any 400-level Honours class designated as Creative Writing. The student must do substantial work in at least two different genres.

It is strongly recommended that students also complete one or more courses in both Canadian literature (ENGL 213, 312-315AA-ZZ) and Aboriginal/First Nations literature (ENGL 310-311AA-ZZ). Students are encouraged to complete ENGL 351 (when available). The creative writing courses CREE 209 and SAUL 209 are also recommended. CREE and/or SAUL 340 (focusing on oral traditions) may also be of interest to some students.

MINOR IN ENGLISH

To earn a Minor in English, students must succcessfully complete the following 7 courses:

2. Two ENGL courses at the 200-or 300-levels

3. Three additional ENGL courses at the 300-level
