Information for Prospective Students

The M.A. Program in English

The University of Regina Department of English is a medium-sized department offering courses and research opportunities in most areas of English, American, and Canadian literatures. The size of its student body ensures that students have ample opportunity for intellectual discussion with their peers, but also the close contact with faculty members that larger institutions are unable to provide. The Department currently offers three routes for the M.A. in English: course-based, thesis-based, and creative-writing thesis. The course M.A. (ten courses) provides an opportunity to achieve a breadth of knowledge in many areas of English literature. The thesis M.A.(five courses plus thesis) provides an opportunity to do in-depth research, and an extended piece of writing, on one area of English literature. The M.A. in Creative Writing consists of five courses (in Creative Writing and English Literature/Theory), and a creative thesis with a critical/ theoretical introduction. Because the Master's degree is normally the highest offered in the Department of English at the University of Regina (but see Special Case Ph.D.), the Department can offer the kind of close support of Master’s students and high-priority supervision of Master's theses sometimes not available in departments with doctoral programs. Both the thesis and course M.A. offer students excellent preparation for graduate studies at the doctoral level, or for jobs and careers in English.

The English Department also invites applicants who will use English as their home department for the course-based interdisciplinary M.A. in Textual Studies degree, tentatively scheduled to begin in 2008. For further details, please contact the Graduate Chair, Department of English

Outline of M.A. Program

The Department of English strongly recommends that both course-based and thesis-based students take the Bibliography/Research Methods graduate course, and the Literary Theory graduate course.

In the course-based M.A., fully-qualified students are required to take ten courses (30 credit hours of courses). With the approval of the Graduate Chair, up to three of these courses may be graduate courses in an area related to but outside English literature.

In the thesis-based M.A., fully-qualified students are required to take five courses, and write a thesis (15 credit hours of coursework, and 15 credit hours of thesis, for a total of 30 credit hours). One of the thesis-based M.A. courses may be a graduate course in an area related to but outside English literature. An additional course outside the area may be taken with permission of the Graduate Chair if it is suitable to the student’s program.

Each graduate course is worth 3 credit hours. The English Department normally offers ten courses over the three semesters (Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer) of the academic year. Courses generally last for one semester of thirteen weeks, running from either September to December (Fall Semester) or January to April (Winter Semester). The English Department also regularly offers a Spring graduate course that takes place over six weeks in May and June.

M.A. in Creative Writing

The Department of English offers a Masters degree in Creative Writing. The MA in Creative Writing is a non-terminal degree. After course work in both academic and creative writing seminars, students write a thesis in the genre of their choice (poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction). Award-winning faculty offer small classes, personal supervision and professional training. A extra benefit to studying creative writing at the University of Regina is that students can participate in a vibrant local writing community that includes numerous reading series and programs offered by the Saskatchewan Writers Guild, the oldest and most established writers' guild in Canada.

Effective September 1, 2006, the University of Regina will implement a new graduate tuition fee structure, under which tuition fees are aligned across Saskatchewan’s universities while U of R graduate tuition remains the lowest in Canada outside of Quebec. The new structure provides clarity and equity for students and increased incentives for timely program completion while addressing the costs of providing and maintaining quality graduate student programs. The full fee structure is laid out in Tuition and Related Fees on the Graduate Studies website.
