The Graduate Chair

The Graduate Chair in the Department of English is the ex officio chair of the Department of English Honours/Graduate Committee. He or she acts as the liaison between the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research and the graduate students in, or applying for admission to, the M.A. in English program. As advisor to all graduate students, the Graduate Chair offers counseling to graduate students on every aspect of the program, from application to graduation and beyond. The Graduate Chair also acts as supervisor to all graduate students until they have found a supervisor.

Registration Procedures

Before registration, all graduate students must consult with the Graduate Chair in the Department of English regarding a suitable outline of courses for their M.A. program. As part of their program, both thesis and course M.A. students in English should take the 800-level courses in Literary Theory, and in Bibliography/Research Methods. Students may elect to take the latter course either as a seminar course offered in alternate years through the University of Regina English Department; or online through the University of Saskatchewan English Department, through SUGA, the Saskatchewan Universities Graduate Agreement (see Transfer Credits).

All graduate students register through the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, normally through online registration. It is also possible to submit a paper registration form, which must be signed and approved by the Graduate Chair in the Department of English. For further details, please consult Registration on the Graduate Studies website; and the complete registration and regulation procedures in the Graduate Calendar

All thesis M.A. students, and all Special Case Ph.D. students, must submit an FGSR Annual Research Progress Report, available on the Graduate Studies website. Students must submit this form once a year, or their registration will be put on hold. Students should submit the form to the Graduate Chair in the Department of English, who will make a copy for the student’s file before passing it on to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. The student’s supervisor (or, if a supervisor has not yet been declared, the Graduate Chair) must fill out the appropriate section on this form and sign it.

Status

Full-time graduate students are those registered in the equivalent of two or more courses per semester (a minimum of 6 credit hours). All other graduate students are considered part-time (see Funding Opportunities), with one exception: students completing their last 3 credit hours in the program are considered full-time. All graduate students must register in the equivalent of a three-credit course at once annually—that is, at least once every three semesters. Students who are using university facilities (libraries, computer labs, faculty support) must register every semester. Thesis M.A. students who have completed coursework and their 15 credit hours of thesis work, but are still at work on their thesis, register in Full-time Maintenance of Candidacy (GRST 995AA), or in Part-time Maintenance of Candidacy (GRST 995AB), at least once a year, until the completion of their degrees. If candidacy is not maintained, the student will be required to discontinue (RTD) for failing to register. For regulations governing the maintenance of status, please consult the Graduate Calendar.

Office Space

The Department of English is able to provide shared office space for a limited number of graduate students. Fully-Qualified, Full-Time students able to demonstrate need will be given priority. For further information, please consult the Graduate Chair in English.

Professional Development Workshops

To assist graduate students in acquiring and refining the skills needed in graduate school and careers in English, the Department of English holds Professional Development Workshops in the fall and winter semesters. The Graduate Chair, in conjunction with the Professional Development Workshops Coordinator elected each year in the Department of English, plans and advertises the workshops to all students. Topics include Workshops on Literary Theory; Submitting Proposals and Abstracts; Writing Conference Papers; Ph.D. Programs; Writing and Revising for Scholarly Publication. All graduate students are expected to attend and participate in the Professional Development Workshops.

The Literary Eclectic: Joint U of R/U of S Grad Students’ Conference

Beginning in 2005, the English Departments at the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan have jointly organized “The Literary Eclectic,” a conference for graduate students (and outstanding honours students) in English. All graduate students are strongly encouraged to apply for this conference in the summer, and attend the conference (usually in late September or early October). The Department of English supports students with funding for the conference, and guidance on writing proposals and delivering papers. Graduate students also play a key role in organizing and running the conference. For further details, or to volunteer to be on the conference organizing committee, please contact the Graduate Chair.
