Our Graduates
Our graduates can be found in news rooms across Canada and around the world.
Here's what a few of them are doing...
Lisa Cook (1995) - After working in magazines in the U.S. for the past 10 years, I recently accepted a communications position at the Yale Law School in New Haven, Conn. I am staying involved in the magazine industry on a freelance basis, and am currently Electronic Media Editor for Soundings magazine, responsible for that publication's twice-monthly e-newsletter.
Sheldon Alberts & Tracey Wright (1989) - Sheldon is the Washington correspondent for the CanWest News Service and the National Post. He's covered everything from the last Presidential election to the war on Iraq, to old lynching trials, the Michael Jackson trial, America's most dangerous cities, and of course hurricanes. I'm his wife Tracey Wright. I'm currently at home with our boys, but while here I've been a freelance news producer in Global Television's Washington Bureau, covering some of the same stories. Prior to Washington we were based in Ottawa where Sheldon was the National Post's Deputy Ottawa Bureau Chief. I was a Senior Producer for CTV National News and Producer of CTV's Sunday political affairs program Question Period.
Todd Battis (1992) - I'm currently Vancouver Bureau Chief for CTV National News, reporting on the 'Wet Coast' after covering science for the network in Halifax.
David Eggleston (1991) - I am at CBC Newsworld in Toronto as a producer in the NCAN (News, Current Affairs and Newsworld) unit. I will soon by producer with Newsworld Business News, but am currently news prod. with CBC News Morning. I always ask newcomers if they are from Regina!
Gord McIntyre (1983) - I've been writing for the Vancouver Province for 14 years, after a couple of years overseas and several years before that with the Leader-Post, Moose Jaw Times-Herald and Battlefords Telegraph. Most recently I've been covering the B.C. election, but normally I'm an NHL beat writer. Before that, I covered the NBA, when Vancouver had a team.
Marie Mendenhall (M E Powell) (1988) - After J-school, I worked for Meadow Lake and Prince Albert newspapers, and then returned to Regina in 1989 to start a family. While raising two children (now aged 15 and 10), I have had more than 400 freelance magazine articles and reviews published or broadcast, including theatre reviews for CBC's Afternoon Edition. I also went back to university to obtain a Master's of Arts in Dramaturgy (2000). This fall, Scholastic will publish my children's non-fiction book, Life of a Dragonfly, and I just signed a contract to write my first adult non-fiction book for Late-Breaking Amazing Stories (working title Missing Children).
Kelly-Anne Riess (2004) - After graduation, I headed up north to the Yukon to cover courts for the Whitehorse Daily Star. My job also allowed me to travel across the subarctic, covering the Yukon Quest, a 1,600 kilometre sled dog race into Fairbanks, Alaska. After a year up north --- writing about murders, drug busts and the like---I decided to return to Regina to work on the show Crime Stories that airs on History Television. The show is produced by the locally-owned Partners in Motion.
Karen Schlamp (nee Brownlee) (2000) - Let's just say internships pay off... I've been employed as a general assignment reporter by the Leader Post-- where I did my internship--since 2004. I arrived there after spending my first four years after j-school working in radio. In 2000, I was hired by Rawlco Radio to produce their afternoon newstalk show based in Regina and broadcast on 980 CJME and 650 CKOM in Saskatoon. A couple of years and a few hosts later, I was paired up with Murray Wood to produce his show. I also filled in as a reporter and anchor when they needed extra help.
Corinna Schuler and Darren Schuettler (1989) - Darren is now Bureau Chief of Indo-China for Reuters, with responsibility for about 40 reporters and five countries. And I am raising two kiddies after having worked as the National Post's Africa correspondent (based in Johannesburg, South Africa) from 1998-2002.
Elaine Shein (1988) - Thanks to the U of R Journalism program, I enjoyed employment at Regina's Leader-Post, Gemini News Service in London, U.K., and the Western Producer in Saskatoon. At the Producer, I spent 14 years, ending in the job as editor and deputy publisher. During those years I was active in the Canadian Association of Journalists and the Canadian Farm Writers Federation, serving on the national executive for a few years. Since 2003, I have been employed as the Published and Editor of Capital Press Agriculture Weekly, based in Salem, Oregon. The newspaper is the west coast's largest ag weekly and covers WA, OR, ID and CA.
Dan Zakreski (1982) - I went to work at the Star-Phoenix in Saskatoon after graduating. For the next 19 years I covered business, agriculture, entertainment, general assignment and courts/crime. For three years, I was investigative reporter for the CanWest newspapers in Saskatchewan. I've been investigative reporter for CBC TV in Saskatchewan since February, 2002, based in Saskatoon.
