Study Abroad Course Proposals

As per section 8.8 of the Faculty Handbook, Faculty members who intend to include international travel as part of a course need to submit a proposal to the Dean's Office. Please use the following form to submit your proposal.

Limited funding is available from the Dean's Office in support of classes that have a study-abroad component. The International Advisory Committee meets in April to consider all applications received (the normal deadline for receipt of applications is 31 March). The Dean will endeavour to supply applicants with a decision, including funding amounts, by the end of April.

Please consult section 8.5 of the Faculty Handbook before preparing and submitting an application. Note that the policy that proposals must be approved at least 10 months before the intended travel date is under discussion; the figure may be reduced to 8 months to accommodate winter session classes.

What in-class work will students be required to undertake before they travel abroad and how much contact time will be utilized for this purpose?

Indicate the semester during which the proposed course will run and the start and end dates of the planned travel-abroad portion of the class.

Why was this particular location chosen and how will that location contribute to the academic goals of the course?

Will a letter of support be forthcoming from the relevant department or program heads? Note that applications will not be considered for approval unless they have departmental support.

A mandatory letter of support from your Department Head needs to be forwarded to the Dean's Office.  If no letter will be forthcoming (ie. applicant is a Department Head) please explain why.

How many faculty members will be attending the travel portion?  Note that Faculty guidelines as stated in section 8.10 of the Faculty Handbook require a minimum of two faculty members (though one may be local to the region being visited) for travel to countries where English is not the primary language.

What arrangements have been made for the payment of instructors?  Please indicate whether the course is to be taught as part of the instructor's regular load or if an overload stipend is to be paid.  This is for information purposes only.  Please do not include overload stipends in your budget calculation.
