André Magnan is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Studies at the University of Regina. His research and teaching interests include the sociology of agrifood relations, globalization and development, environmental sociology, and sociological theory. Dr. Magnan's dissertation research explored the complex interplay of social, political and economic factors that have shaped historical changes in the wheat-bread commodity chain linking Canada and the UK. The dissertation focuses in particular on the changing role of the Canadian Wheat Board over the last 70 years, exploring the tensions arising from its three historical roles: as a vehicle of farmer cooperation, as an instrument of government policy, and as the commercial entity linking prairie agriculture into circuits of capital accumulation.
