Registering for classes

As each new semester approaches, the Registrar's Office issues "time tickets", which indicate the dates at which specific groups of students (grouped by the number of credit hours they have already completed) may begin registering for classes in that semester. You can check your own time ticket through UR Self-Service.

Even if your time ticket entitles you to begin registering for classes, you may be prevented from doing so by other conditions. Prepare for these potential problems early; don't wait until your time ticket is valid to find them out. By the time you can get solutions implemented, the classes you want may already have filled up.

Here are some of the things that may prevent you from registering for classes even if your time ticket is valid:

  • financial holds: there may be a hold on your student account because you haven't paid some bills
  • academic holds: you may be prohibited from registering if your academic standing is poor; in this case you will need to meet with an academic advisor before you will be permitted to register (you can check whether any academic holds are on your account by clicking on "Check Your Registration Status) in UR Self-Service)
  • course restrictions: classes can be restricted to students from certain majors, programs, faculties or colleges
  • maximum number of hours: by default students can only register in 15 credit hours per semester; if you're hoping to register in more than that, you'll need special permission
  • course prerequisites: you may not yet have completed certain courses that you need to have taken before you try to register in a given course; or you may need to get the permission of the department head to take a particular course
  • maximum number of attempts: you can only register in the course twice; you will be denied an attempt to register in the same course for a third time (or for ENGL 100 a fourth time)
