Arts and Culture

Arts and Culture/ Cultural Studies is an undergraduate program, jointly administered by Luther College, the Faculty of Fine Arts, and the Faculty of Arts, that has been designed to offer you an interdisciplinary approach to the many ways that we attempt to make sense of the world in which we live in. Cultural studies seeks to understand the ways in which meaning is generated, disseminated, and produced through various practices, beliefs, institutions, and social structures within a given culture and examines the construction of individual and social identity, especially for such social groupings as class, race, sexuality, gender, and nationality.

The program is interdisciplinary in nature and designed to better allow you to study particular elements of culture that are of interest to you (evaluating how television shapes gender roles, assessing the significance of contemporary clothing /tattoos, or investigate and critique the world of social media). A limited number of core requirements and a great deal of flexibility that combine classes from the humanities, social sciences and fine arts allow you to create a program that is as highly individualized and specific as you are.

A BA in Arts and Culture provides you with the opportunity to develop a strong set of skills that are in demand with current employers including the ability to analysis, interpret and critically evaluate information (be it visual, written or aural); written and spoken communication skills, IT skills; project management and learning how to work as a team, problem-solving skills and developing strategies to deal with key issues that arise; and time management skills.

A BA in Arts and Culture may lead you to further academic study or to a career that is connected to the skills that you've developed during your time at the University of Regina. The possibilities are endless but some of the jobs most closely related to a degree in Cultural Studies, either directly after graduating (or after further training and work experience) include: Library Assistant, Community Projects Co-ordinator, Gallery or Museum Assistant, Arts Administrator, Government Policy Analyst/Advisor, Media Commentator or Researcher.
